People On The Trip
This hike was done as a part of this event: http://www.adkhighpeaks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4723. We met Jim (another hiker from adkhighpeaks) at the Loj, geared up and began our hike. We headed out at a quick pace and quickly reached the junction with the trail to Algonquin. Nicole had a nasty cold so she decided to head back at this point. We continued on and reached Marcy Dam in a little less than an hour. We checked in at that trail register, chatted with some other hikers and then continued up the Phelps trail. Just before we reached the junction with the trail to the summit of Phelps Nate bonked and decided to head back.|
For the rest of the trip it was Jason, Jim, and myself. After climbing along Phelps brook we crossed and began to climb more steeply. On the way up we decided to climb the ski trail, I don't know if this was the right choice because most of the snow was un-consildated so we burned quite a bit of energy. Eventually we reached the marked junction with the tabletop herd path. We were excited to see that it was already broken out, this meant less work and less route finding. The trail was very tight, especially with the deep snow base so we spent our time ducking under and around pine trees, trying to avoid getting snow dumped down our back.
After a little while the climb got steep and views opened up back to Wright and Colden. Eventually the steepness subsided and we gained the summit ridge. From there it was a nice level walk to the summit sign on Tabletop. We took some summit pictures at the top. Just as we decided to descend another group caught us at the summit, we took their picture and then began the climb down. We made it down rather quickly and took a nice break at the Tabletop trail junction.
We descended the ski trail while I did some "xtreeme" snowshoeing. We got down to the Phelps trail junction and were ecstatic to find the trail broken out (it wasn't when we passed it on the way up). We met the woman who broke the trail out and profusely thanked her. We began our climb of Phelps and we all quickly bonked out pretty badly. We slowly walked our way up to the top with frequent breaks. Eventually we reached the top and enjoyed the "views" of the fog. At this point all of our feet were getting pretty beat up by snowshoes so we stopped for a while in a few snow covered trees to get out of the wind and get off our feet. Eventually we began our descent and in no time we were back at the Phelps junction. The rest of the hike out was a slog back out to the Loj.
Just as we arrived at the car Nate and Nicole were coming out of the HPIC. We went back to the Brookside Inn in Upper Jay, showered, and then joined the festivities at the Ark.
The Good and The Bad
The hiking was fun
Beating up on my feet
|Uneventful on the way up. On the way down we hit some pretty rough snow from Tupper Lake back to Syracuse|
