People On The Trip

Trip Report

Crappy day for a hike, good day to do mountain without views, Tabletop, and not so good a day to do one with nice views, Phelps. With my feet feeling like hamburg and the whole day in front of myself and Steve from the ADK On chapter, we started off for tabletop. We left the HPIC about 7:30 and were on the summit of table top by 10:30. The trail is very well defined, the start is marked with a sign and a cairn, barring that it is just before Indian falls where the Marcy Ski trail rejoins the Van Hovenburg Trail. There is still a summit sign on Tabletop, follow the trail along the summit until it peters out. Going past the summit is supposed to be a good view, but in the 40 degree blowing rain we passed. Back down the herd path, which is better shape than most marked trails, down the Van Ho past all the tourists in their cotton shorts and t-shirts on the way to Marcy. Hit the Phelps trail again at 11:30, summit of Phelps by 12:45, bonked a bit on the way up. Doctored the feet and the view cleared enough to tease. Back down about 1, well into the tree line the clouds lifted, or at least I got below them and the sun started to come out. Avoided the crowds from Marcy Damn to HPIC by taking the long way out South Meadows Truck trail. Truck trail is far superior to Marcy Damn trail, especially when the extra 1.7 miles back to HPIC isn't a factor.
