People On The Trip

Trip Report

Started at Appalachia sunday. Got to Madhouse (madison hut) in 2:05 via Valley way (4.0 miles, 2200 foot gain) just before the rain. Rain/snow/sleet on Madison, and Washington, white out reported on Adams. Snug as a cold bug in a rug at Madison all day. Traversed to Mizpah Springs Monday via Gulfside, Westside, and Crawford Path on monday. Stopped at Lakes for lunch. Did the traverse in 7 hours and change. Out to Crawford Notch on Tuesday am. Changed plans and drove to Zealand trailhead to mitigate risk. Quick cruise to Zealand hut. Went to Zeacliff after lunch and got views. Took bath in falls after Zeacliff. Wed hiked out and drove to Gale River trail head. In to Galehead hut in 2:30 (4.6 miles, 2200 ft gain). Stayed at Galehead 2 nights and chilled. Got galehead again on Wed with views this time and South twin on Thur. Out on Friday in 1:40. Drove to highland center and used most excellent and expensive pay shower. Then home, with lunch at Long Trail Inn.

The Good and The Bad

The Good:

Getting away from it all. The cute women running the huts this year. The turkey dinner with all the fixins at galehead for the 4th. Snow on July 1 at Madison Summit (reported) we were inside and content to huddle under wool blankets with long johns and fleeces, watching out breath and reading back issues of Appalachia. The views from Zeacliff. Chillin at the huts

The Bad:

Sideways driving rain at 20+ MPH on the way to Eisenhower. The tourists at Zealand Falls hut, the drive home

The Drive

Out was good except for the Lake George traffic crap, back sucked all the way from Woodstock to Fondaville minus the bit on 87 south
