People On The Trip

Trip Report

We didn\'t sign up for any peaks for the gathering so we decided to do something easy yet difficult, and most importantly fun. Left the HPIC pretty late (around 7 or 8?) and busted hump up algonquin. At treeline the weather got a little nasty so we layered up a bit. Like dopes we stayed in snowshoes all the way over big Al (on the way back we went to crampons treeline to treeline). Once we reached the algonquin/boundary col we were pleased to find a broken trail over to Iroquois. I was fortunate in that I only went into a few spruce traps. There was one section of REALLY steep snow that was a challenge (to climb, but it was a BLAST to jump off of on the way down). Iroquois was windy near the summit so we didn\'t stay for long (plus we were in/out of the clouds all day).

On the way back up Algonquin we noticed the hoards, so by the time we topped out we just kept walking rather than joining the party. Back at the wright junction we ran into viewseeker and his crowd celebrating his W46 finish. We made it a goal to get up/down wright and to catch the group prior to the parking lot.

We pushed hard to summit wright (I ran in a few places) but unfortunately I was 2 minutes slower than my (summer) record. We enjoyed the summit quick and then started our descent. The whole descent from Algonquin treeline, along wright, and down to the steep climb was a blast for me because I was able to "ski" my snowshoes in the powdery snow (which had a supportive base). We ended up catching the group at the Marcy Dam junction. From there we hauled butt out to the trailhead.
