People On The Trip

Trip Report

I came up with the brilliant idea of trying to catch a sunrise from a summit. St. Regis supposedly had a bald summit and we needed it for the FTC so we made plans to camp out under the stars Thursday night. We left Syracuse @ 9pm, arrived at the trailhead at around midnight and were at the summit some time between 1 and 1:30. The views were pretty cool as the clouds passed over head. The forecast was 0% chance of rain, but you know how that goes because we got rained on at about 3am so we had to roll up inside of our backup tarps to keep our sleeping bags dry during the storm.

Eventually sunrise came and it was obscured by clouds on the horizon so it seemed like it was all for nothing... Oh well at least we had the fun experience.

The Good and The Bad

The Good:

Night time views from the summit
a few views at sunrise

The Bad:

Getting rained on
Never-ending trail on the way out to the road
2-3 hours of sleep that night
Feeling like we had a hangover for the next few days after this debacle

The Drive

Like an idiot I didn't want to backtrack to Tupper Lake for breakfast at the lumberjack so we kept going. The good deli in Saranac doesn't do hot breakfast so we were screwed there and eventually ended up getting Stewart's though it wasn't satisfying (neither of us really had an appetite at this point anyways)
