People On The Trip

Trip Report

Jim and Matt went up Friday morning. They hiked in to Marcy Dam and then hiked Phelps, while there Jim's boots exploded. Luckily I was still at work so Deb delivered some spare boots.

I got up to the Loj after 10 and hiked in to Marcy Dam finding Jim and Matt in the first leanto on the right (it wasn't a very nice one (leaky roof). I didn't sleep all that well because my ribs still hurt from a DH MTB crash.

We woke up early the next day and headed back towards the Loj after packing up. Soon we were at the trail junction, we ditched our stuff in the woods and continued the climb with light weight packs. Despite the tons of rain that had come through earlier on Friday the trail was in pretty good shape (plus there were plenty of rocks). We made pretty good time climbing and we were at the campsite/MacEntyre falls pretty quickly. We took a few quick breaks along the way to snack but overall we moved at a nice gradual pace.

After reaching the Wright junction we continued up Algonquin. The climb was steep but fun and soon we were at treeline. I was wearing a t-shirt and shorts up to this point and I made it roughly 50 vertical feet above treeline before I decided to layer up (rain shell and rain pants + hat & gloves). The rest of the climb above treeline was fun and there were a few spots with ice along the trail so we had to be careful.

After enjoying the summit in the clouds for ~20 minutes we started descending, about half way between the summit and treeline the clouds broke and we were treated to some great views.

At treeline I tried to goad Jim and Matt into doing Wright but they weren't really interested. I ran down ahead of them and hustled up Wright as fast as I could (~20 minutes). I took a break at the top and then headed down after taking some pictures. I was too winded/nauseous to eat/drink anything. At the wright junction I was treated to a BSA troop of ~30 kids :x

I hustled down the trail, passing a lot of "tourists" along the way before catching up with Jim and Matt just before the trail turns off the ski trail back to the trail junction.

We found our packs and hiked the remaining mile back to the car.

Overall it was a great day, I really enjoyed hiking with Jim and Matt and it was really nice to get out on the mountains on a nice fall day.
