People On The Trip

Trip Report

We needed to get Owl's Head to get one mountain closer to completing our fire tower challenge but I didn't want to drive 7 hours for 3 hours of hiking so we decided to add Blue as well. We arrived at the trailhead and were hiking by ~10. The first 1.5 miles of the approach to Owl's Head were very moderate and we made good time. After the marked trail junction we had a good view of the two sub-summits of the ridge that we would be hiking between. This made our goal easy to visualize. Eventually we gained the ridge and made our way to the site of the old cabin. From there the climb got pretty steep and after a short while we were at the tower. The views from the ground were a pleasant surprise but the views from the tower towards the high peaks were definitely the highlight. We hung around the summit for a while before heading down. Unfortunately I had to re-tie my boots on the descent to prevent blisters from forming on the top of my toes from toe bang. The rest of the walk out to the car was uneventful. We got back to the car after ~4 hours and headed to Stewart's in town where we treated ourselves to a late lunch of ramen noodles.

After our lunch we drove down to Blue Mountain Lake where we climbed blue. We were making great time at the beginning but eventually I started to get tired and one of the muscles in my leg got pretty sore. We made the summit of blue just around sunset and then descended in twilight. We made it back to the car without the use of headlamps which was a challenge in a few areas but still doable. Even though we were tired we cranked Blue out in ~2.5 hours car to car which is pretty solid.

Owls Head: 6.1 mi. 1150 ft gain

Blue: 4 mi. 1550 ft gain

The Good and The Bad

The Good:

Nice views from owl's head
Good winter snowshoe conditions
Fast hiking on Blue

The Bad:

Having to re-tie the boots to prevent blisters
Having a terrible song stuck in my head

The Drive

Uneventful. We were pleased to find the road plowed to the Owl's Head trailhead. On most topos it looks like a seasonal road but it has year round residents so it is plowed all year
