People On The Trip

Trip Report

After getting turned back by running out of time on Thanksgiving Nicole and I decided to give the kinsmen another try on Easter. The forecast early in the week called for mid 40s and sunny, when we arrived in the parking lot, it was in the 20s and lightly snowing. We geared up and started climbing the lonesome lake trail up to the hut. At the hut I stopped to adjust my boots and the hut caretaker warned us that it was going to be quite windy on the summits. Nicole and I made great time the whole climb in our microspikes (the trail was like a sidewalk). The wind did make it difficult to stay warm if you stopped without layering up so we kept moving most of the time.

The climb up the fishin jimmy trail had a lot of pointless up and down but eventually we reached the trail junction on the ridge. We had a quick snack and then began the climb to North Kinsman. The climb was very gradual (with the exception of a few steep spots) so we made great time to our first summit of the day. We didn't even take a break as we wanted to get out of the wind. As we headed into the col I noticed the trail wasn't too steep most of the way, this would make the climbing on the way home a little easier. The climb up South Kinsman was nice and gradual as well and we made quick work of it. We arrived at the lower summit bump and then traversed over to the true summit. We snapped a few quick pictures and then began our descent.

We got back to the trail junction on the ridge as fast as possible and then took a quick break for lunch at the kinsman pond shelter. After fueling up we headed back down (and up, and down, and up, and down) the fishin jimmy trail to the hut. Once at the hut Nicole and I took a nice half hour break while chatting it up with the caretaker. We were back to the car in well under book time (because of the excellent trail conditions). Although there was some wind up on the ridge, we actually found it to be considerably windier at the hut (near the lake) and in the parking lot.

The Good and The Bad

The Good:

Great trail conditions
A nice long break at the hut on the hike down
A nice gradual col between north and south

The Bad:

Bad conditions in the parking lot?
Warnings of bad weather causing apprehensions

The Drive

Nicole was nice enough to drive up, I drove home.
