People On The Trip
We hiked in from upper works friday night. The hike in was pretty rough because we arrived at the trailhed at approximately 10 pm and we didn\'t know how far the leantos were. Once we arrived the rest of the group camped in tents while I slept in the leanto.|
The next morning I woke at around 6 am and found tha t the idiots in my leanto had lost their food to a bear. We got everyone up and began to hike to cliff and redfield.
The hike around flowed lands to lake colden was pretty nice and scenic. The turn off to the Marshall herd path is pretty obvious along this path. We reached the dam at lake colden, crossed and began to climb towards the uphill leanto.
Once we got to the leanto we took a quick break and went to climb Redfield. The herd path is about 10 yards uphill from the leanto. The climb up Redfield was pretty well defined, however once you reached the end of the brook, the trail keeps on going for a while, so don\'t get your hopes up.
The views from Redfield were ok, although we were a little socked in. At the bottom we went over to the Cliff herd path. At the bottom of the path it is all mud, you can take a shortcut from the Redfield path to avoid the mud.
The climb up cliff is pretty terrible, not to mention the false summits. Eventually we reached the summit of Cliff and took a few pictures. We descended Cliff and hiked back to our camp at Flowed Lands.
This is where it got interesting, when I got back into my leanto I was told by a few DEC officers that there was a bear problem and we would have to leave. Eventually the DEC offered to find us another leanto nearby. We eventually moved to the leanto and went to bed. We later found out the bear was killed monday night.
The Good and The Bad
The hike was pretty nice. The hike from flowed lands to lake colden to the uphill leanto was the best part. The hike up the mountains was OK, cliff was kind of fun in a sadistic way.
The rain on the way down, the mud on cliff, getting kicked out of our leantos, and the hike out to upper works
|The drive was pretty uneventful. We drove up through the Adirondacks by getting off in utica and driving through old forge|
